How we build it

- Hardware chosen for the workload and the budget, with room to grow, rather than for the brochure.
- Built to be rebuilt
- Servers are installed automatically from a known configuration when they boot from the network, so a new or failed machine is brought into service by building it again rather than by repairing it by hand.
- Storage in few places
- Data is kept in one or two well-understood places, with snapshots and replication, so there are fewer things to back up and fewer places to control access.
- Recovery as part of the lifecycle
- Build, run, grow and recover are planned together. A system is designed with the way it is brought back already worked out.
- Operations on record
- Changes across the estate are made through ctrl-exec, so every task is authorised and recorded with who ran it and what it returned.
