Apps and websites on your Odoo

Simple screens for the people doing the work, public pages for the people outside, and Odoo behind them as the one system of record.

Odoo is designed for people who work in it all day. Many more people touch the business occasionally: the operative moving stock, the colleague claiming an expense, the supplier opening an account, the visitor at a trade stand. For them, a screen that does one job in the words of that job is easier to learn and harder to get wrong.

We build those screens and pages on Odoo, using two pieces of our own software:

lazysite
Serves the pages, forms and staff screens, signs people in, and keeps a record of what was sent.
BOOM
Carries each action into Odoo through Odoo's own logic, as the person using it. Odoo's rules, computations and access checks all apply, exactly as they do on Odoo's own screens.

Each app is a small folder of pages and a pack of operations. It is added to a site, and removed from it, without changing Odoo's code, so an Odoo upgrade carries on as normal. People who need the full Odoo interface keep using it, on the same database.

The pattern itself is one we have used for more than a decade, with a different front end each time - read about it in Odoo as a headless ERP.

What it can look like

We have built these apps in our lab and tested them in a browser against Odoo 16 and Odoo 18 databases. Each is fitted to a client's own Odoo, modules and permissions when it is put to use.

CRM
Work the pipeline, open a lead with its history, add a lead, and take leads from a public event form straight into Odoo.
Quotations
Find a customer and products, let Odoo price the quotation, add and remove lines, download the PDF, confirm.
Stock and picking
Look up stock by scanning a barcode with the phone's camera, move stock and packages, pick deliveries line by line.
Expenses
Photograph a receipt, register the expense and submit it for approval.
Time off and attendance
Balances, requests and approvals; clock in and out, and see who is in.
Timesheets and payslips
Log time against the week; see your own payslips.
Supplier onboarding
A public supplier account form, a review queue, corrections with a change note, then the supplier made in Odoo.

Every screen follows one design: one task per screen, plain words from the job rather than Odoo's field names, large touch targets, and light and dark modes. A theme sets the colours and type, so the apps carry your brand.

From a paper form to an app

Many businesses run on forms and spreadsheets that sit beside the ERP: account opening forms, request forms, checklists, registers. Each one is a process that Odoo only sees once someone types it in.

Our supplier account form started as a Word document with sections for company details, contacts, account terms, bank details and a box marked "For completion internally". It became:

The same method works for any form or register:

  1. Look at how the document is used: who fills it in, who checks it, and what happens next.
  2. Map each field to its place in Odoo.
  3. Settle the open questions with the person who owns the process.
  4. Build the pages and operations as one app.
  5. Test it in a browser against a copy of your Odoo with test data, then hand it over.

The data is entered once, by the person who has it, checked by the person responsible, and arrives in Odoo with a record of each step.

Away from a desk

The apps install on a phone or tablet like any other app. Pages keep the data from the last visit, and an expense, a time-off request or a timesheet line can be entered without a signal and is sent when the connection returns.

AI assistants working alongside staff

An AI assistant can work in Odoo through the same arrangement. It signs in to the site with its own account and to Odoo with its own Odoo login, so Odoo's permissions limit what it can do and Odoo's records show what it did. It can use only the operations the site administrator has opened to it. Each change is first shown as a plan, made only once a person confirms it, then read back and recorded.

Your Odoo version

BOOM is one library covering Odoo 16 to 19, with 16 and 18 tested live on every release. The differences between Odoo versions are kept in data files, so the operations an app calls keep the same names on each version. The lab apps run on Odoo 16 (sales, stock, purchasing, expenses) and Odoo 18 (HR).
